How Long Can We Wait?

The FR has a long and noble tradition of the temporary becoming the almost-permanent.

Consider the New Moelwyn Tunnel portals as one of the more recent and high profile examples of this.

Now the rumours are growing stronger that Welsh Pony is heading down this road.

The 'chocolate box' lining revealed at the Bygones event has been met with rave reviews and we're hearing suggestions from usually reliable sources that it could be a couple of years before this 'running in' colour scheme is replaced with the intended Garraway Green.

All of which begs the question:  what should we do with our model which is still clothed only in primer?

We had intended to turn it out in green, but only after the real one appeared in that livery to make sure we don't get caught out.

But how long should we wait?

With other models such as 87 and Lyd, we turned ours out in the liveries in which they first ran - namely light grey and spoof BR black.

Should Pony follow this tradition?

  1. I think you should. I saw her in the flesh in mid September and she looked stunning: the addition of lining has taken her to another level. In the current circumstances, I can see her staying like that for a fair while yet, too.

  2. Well, you know my thoughts on that. Indeed, you made a comment on the photo of our WP running on TYB.
My view is, the loco was considered by AGWG as unfinished business, a business now completed. The excellent proposal to paint the loco in the Garraway Green livery would pay homage to this. As such, mine will always run in that livery, whether the prototype carries it or not. Modellers licence applied.

  3. The loco has only 1 coat of paint and two coats of varnish so how long it will last will be dictated by that I suspect. And of course availability of funds.

  4. Go with the chocolate box, its unusual and striking, I really hope peco bring it out eventually after the other England's

  6. The brown looks great, I'd go with that. If they change it to green, either re-paint or build another. (Non-modeler talking here)

  7. I think it's a really good looking livery, representing the loco in the condition it's in at the railway's time of need, and thus tells a good story. Definitely paint your model like this!
